Sunday, June 25th will see the return of Strange Sounds From Beyond to Noorderlicht for our second instalment of the festival. After an encouraging debut that sought to infuse unexpected new flavors into Amsterdam’s festival scene last summer, we have attempted to piece together a new program meant to invigorate the senses and broaden one’s experimental musical palette.
With a line-up reflecting both homegrown talents and gifted guests from afar, we plan to continue the tradition set at our first inaugural outing: to shine a light not just on music dominating the airwaves, but also under-celebrated gems that bring something a little different to the game. As our planning continues to take shape, we are ready to reveal the first of many exciting acts billed to perform this summer.
Selda Bağcan is a Turkish heroine to many. A singer-songwriter of Turkish Psychedelic folk with a musical career marked by political upheavals, she penned a string of protest songs that made huge waves in the Turkish community. We’re honored to have this living legend on board.
Under the direction of Marshall Allen (92), the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra will be a sight to behold. This year marks the 60th anniversary of this fluid ensemble of psychedelic, experimental and improvised jazz performers. Universally celebrated by critics and fans alike, the legacy of the prolific Sun Ra lives on through the magnificently boisterous performances of one of the greatest live-acts of all time.
Nation will return under the disguise of two weirdo freaks who fiend for the machines! Mutant Beat Dance will perform for an exclusive and highly limited one-time tour across Europe this summer, after critical acclaim to their releases on Discos Capablanca, LIES, Rong Music, Rush Hour and Light Sounds Dark.
This year also marks Rush Hour’s 20 years in existence and as part of their celebration, we are pleased to announce that they will be accompanying Red Light Radio and The Rest Is Noise to host a stage each at the festival. We’ll keep you in suspense about the line-up for now, but you can expect the same quality offerings that we have grown accustomed to receiving from this establishment over the last two decades; from exotic disco to the harder flavors played by some of the Rush Hour All Stars, and of course some surprising acts.
Cologne-based Lena Willikens holds a residency at the infamous Salon Des Amateurs in Dusseldorf and runs Sentimental Flashback, a monthly podcast series for Radio Cómeme. Her uncanny ability to work a broad range of eclectic and unusual sounds into the dancefloor will be a welcome addition to our festival.
We never know what to expect when Orpheu The Wizard – the eternally curious head honcho of Red Light Radio and one of our homegrown talents – gets behind the decks. Leave all your preconceived notions behind and prepare to hitch a ride to destination unknown.
Armed with his guitar and effects boxes, French guitarist High Wolf will lull you into a meditative state by the idyllic waters of Noorderlicht with his repetitive dream-inducing sounds. You could be forgiven for thinking you can walk on water!
Vladimir Ivkovic was the first artist to be featured in SSFB’s Mix Series and is a colleague of Lena Willikens at the Salon Des Amateurs where he also holds a residency. The challenging sets he delivers are not always easy, but almost always ingenious.
Luca & Mata Hari, the hosts of SSFB’s monthly radio show will also take to the decks this summer as one of our local acts.
SSFB’s second outing will take place once more on the green terrain of the waterfront-facing Noorderlicht. Situated along the Amsterdamse IJ one will find enough coolness on a hopefully beautiful summer day. And as usual there’s great food provided by the caterers of the colorful Noorderlicht.
